Petitioning BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Latest TV Brighton
Include Joe Neilson, the only disabled independent candidate in the TV Leaders’ Debates ahead of the 2015 Election.
Brighton, United Kingdom
It has been announced that the leader of UKIP, Nigel Farage has been invited to join the leaders debates on national TV before next year’s general election and that Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party, has consulted lawyers at having been excluded from these debates; but what about the INDEPENDENTS?
UKIP has just gained its first MP; the Greens have had an MP (Caroline Lucas) for 4 years and the only independent candidate of note in recent years has been journalist Martin Bell.
Joe Neilson, standing as an independent candidate for Brighton Kemptown is the only independent disabled candidate standing in the 2015 election. Why should he be excluded too?
The only independent disabled person standing in the election, Joe Neilson has received a grant under the ‘Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Fund’ to help finance his election campaign; Joe said, “Without this grant I could have become a candidate.”
This little known fund, ‘The Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Fund’ can pay a disabled person up to £40,000.00 per year to stand for public office.
Amazon explorer Joe Neilson from Peacehaven said, “I want to bring integrity and honesty to public office and be a voice to the people of the Brighton Kemptown constituency.”
Joe Neilson has just as much a right to be on that panel as the others. Apparently it’s too “messy” to have too many candidates in a TV debate.
By excluding a disabled candidate, we are sending a clear message to the public — politics is still an old boy’s club.
Mr Neilson said, “Independents are classified as being poison because we will tell the public the truth.”
