Well, that was just what the doctor ordered. A great turn out of people, young and old – and even a couple from Kent – came and had a look at just how the Bevy has been transformed. The tables and chairs we got cheap from a closed down cafe gave the place a real lift. We had tea and biscuits and even a workable loo. And during our tours we all loved showing off the sliding doors that close the cafe from the pub area.
The feedback was fantastic and it was great to see so many locals excited about the Bevy opening again four years after it was shut. One of the old regulars told us “Moulsecoomb isn’t Moulsecoomb without a pub.” Another said how he now drinks in Lewes but would love somewhere to meet his neighbours again. Another lady donated a big bottle of whiskey for a raffle prize.
And you know that there are places like Moulsecoomb and Bevendean all over the country that are crying out for their locals to be re-opened and re-invented so that communities can become better places where people get the chance to meet each other.
All of which makes us more determined than ever to open as soon as we can.
There’s just the small matter or raising another £50,000, so we can amongst other things, kit out the kitchen, fit and stock the bar, put in the cellar and build the pub garden. We have a few plans up our sleeves but are also relying on ordinary people to help us out.

The Cuthbert and Newmarket Arms have been lost to housing, while the property vultures are circling over the Rosehill Tavern.
Whatever you think of these pubs, once they are lost, they are gone forever from the community and we need more than smart phones and shopping to nourish the soul.
However, there’s one place that is nearly ready to open four years after being closed down.
Thanks to a few pig-headed residents, a superhero Vicar, hundreds of shareholders and a government grant, the old Bevendean Pub has been transformed and is set to become the first co-op pub on a housing estate in the UK. Building work has now finished but we need just a bit more money to get us over the finishing line.
Instead of brick dust we can nearly taste our first pint!
Our strapline has always been that it will be so much more than just a pub and one of the reasons we got the grant was because of letters of support from groups as diverse as the local brownies, NHS, Albion in the Community and residents groups. It will be a community hub, something for everyone, somewhere for people to meet, to chew over the day’s events and get to know our neighbours.
We still need £40,000 to kit out the kitchen, fit and stock the bar, put in the cellar and build the pub garden.

As with Brighton & Hove’s Green City Council asking for a 4.75% rise in Council Tax and what with Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne, asking for a raise in the Police Precept (Tax), it comes as no great surprise that The Bevy Community Pub is asking for more money too.
THE BEVY NEEDS MORE MONEY as work starts in earnest.
Having raised £200,000 through share sales and a £130,000 grant from George Osborn’s Social Investment Business fund, The Bevy Committee say they need another £70,000 to give it the “WOW factor.”
Made up of local people, The Bevy Committee who’s Chairman is Warren Carter, who runs the Moulsecoomb Forest Garden and Wildlife Project, said in their FB status states, “Dear friends, Great news – the builders are in and the transformation of the old Bevendean Pub into “so much more than a pub” has begun. But we need your help again. Unfortunately we still need around £70,000 to open, in addition to the £200,000 we have already raised.”
Bucking the National Trend and Opening a Pub.
Tucked away in the sleepy suburbs on the outskirts of Brighton, Moulsecoomb is on the up and up.
Once viewed within the top 5% of the most socially-deprived areas in England, Moulsecoomb has gone through a make-over which has turned it from being in the top 5% of the most socially-deprived areas, to being in the top 5% of the richest investment areas in England.
Located on the northeastern side of Brighton, around the A270 Lewes Road, Moulsecoomb is found between the areas of Coldean and Bevendean, approximately a 2¼ mile walk to Brighton’s seafront.

There are a number of reasons, but remember they are starting from scratch, an empty shell of a building.

There is something interesting I’ve learnt about Moulsecoomb, I want to share with you.
The name is sometimes pronounced as if spelled Mools-coomb, though perhaps more often the first part is pronounced like the animal “mole.” It derives from the Old English for Muls Valley: Mul was a Saxon nobleman, and as I’ve discovered by using the resources at The Keep (which the Queen personally opened, with her husband on Halloween’s Day 2013,) I’ve found out that Brighton is veritably littered with Anglo Saxon remains. The gardens of the Exeter street area near Brighton Station for example have been giving up remains of Saxon nobleman for the last hundred years. In fact Charles Davis, the headmaster of Moulsecoomb Primary School boasts of a Roman Villa located underneath the school’s football pitch.
I tell you, its amazing, the place is veritably littered with Anglo-Saxon, Roman and ultimately, Ancient British King Arthur II Kingdom remains.
Not only is Moulsecoomb (including North Moulsecoomb, East Moulsecoomb, Hollingbury, Coldean, Bates Estate and Lower Bevendean) in the top 5% of places to live in England, we are now discovering that it’s always been the best place to live in England for the last two thousand odd years!
